TS203: Spirit, Church and the Christian Life

The core systematic agenda is completed with this course on Spirit, Church and the Christian Life. It explores the person and work of the Spirit by asking why the Spirit has been neglected for so long in Christian theology but is now attracting a 'positive obsession'. The course is also concerned with how the Spirit is to be understood in a range of fresh contexts to do with gender and the environment. The doctrine of the church is not always the most attractive item on the systematic agenda. It can seem all to human and we know its problems. Here we are interested in the theological shape of the church and how it is informed by range of images, models and marks. What does it mean for the church to be a sacramental community? How are we to understand what 'happens' in baptism and the Eucharist? The final part of the course is concerned with how we understand Christian discipleship and ends with an inquiry into the nature of Christian hope.
