CHC101: The History of Christianity to 500 CE
The first 500 years of the church’s life shaped it in profound ways as it clarified its structure, its self-understanding, and its fundamental ideas about God, Christ and the Spirit. There was no blueprint for this development, and there were many different responses to Jesus and his message. The course will introduce students to some of this variety and to the emergence of the main stream of the Christian tradition, its key texts and styles and to some of the formative thinkers who influenced its direction.
