The Licentiate in Theology offers a number of interesting papers and as such is an excellent resource for lay persons or for the continuing professional development of Lay Preachers, Licensed Lay Ministers and those who are ordained. Papers are offered as individual papers as well as being part of qualifications e.g. Stand-Alone Certificate, Ministry Certificate and Associate Diploma. These stages are explained on the Course Information page.

For each paper a Unit outline, a Study Guide, Readings, and sometimes audio tapes are provided. One or two textbooks are generally required. Each paper has a tutor who is available for advice, help and the marking of assignments. Honours in the Diploma of LTh will be awarded where the candidate has completed LTh with a B+ average.

To qualify with an LTh 15 papers are required:

Hebrew Scriptures New Testament Church in Context Theological Studies Mission and Ministry
HS101 NT101 CHC101
CHC102
TS101 MM102
ONE further paper in each of the above areas.
FOUR further papers, two from one area and two from another area. ONE of which may be taken as LTh315

General Information

What are the assessment requirements?
The requirements for the successful completion of each course will be clearly set out in the course outline.

This usually amounts to 240 hours of study and the submission of a number of written assignments amounting to some 6,000 words in total. In Hebrew and Greek language courses there will be written tests during the year and an examination at the end of the course.

How long are the courses?
Each course is intended to be spread over a full academic year (March-November). However some courses are offered on a one semester basis where the student puts in extra hours over a reduced period of time.

Enrolment procedures.
An enrolment form is provided in the Handbook, or may be acquired on this website, or through the Academic Registrar. In completing this form a student should mark the appropriate space to indicate whether the paper is being done as a Stand-Alone paper or for a Ministry Certificate, an Associate Diploma, or a Licentiate in Theology. When enrolling for the papers that will complete their LTh a student should indicate this to the Academic Registrar.

Awarding of Certificates and Diplomas.
Certificates will be awarded at each level which will clearly indicate the contents of the course and the level at which it was completed i.e. Diploma or Certificate.

A Graduation Ceremony is held each year (usually in April) where Certificates and Diplomas are conferred. Graduating students are entitled to such conferral or may choose to receive their award in absentia.
